Best Places to Work 2011

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

Once again, Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing has been named by Outside Magazine as a “Best Place to Work!” For the second year in a row, WAEL has gone up against companies such as Patagonia, New Belgium Brewing, and Keen to compete for a spot in the coveted Top 50 Best Places to Work List. To check out the whole list, click here.

Coming in at #15 is an improvement from last year’s ranking of 25, which the staff are very happy about. Many of the staff love the working environment of WAEL aside from the ranking, but it is nice to be recognized nationally for the cool situation we have at a small business. To check out the WAEL information on the Outside Magazine website, click here. It’s not everywhere that you get to borrow a kayak for free, get free housing and meals, and get to bring your dog to work. Interested in joining our crazy, happy staff? Check out our employment page and send in an application today! We are always accepting applications and will be hiring for summer staff positions in the spring.

Some may ask…why choose an adventure program??

An adventure program provides an environment that teaches and builds self sufficiency, perseverance, confidence, teamwork, and leadership. A wilderness participant learns the basics of survival and how to take care of themselves in the outdoor environment. Who wouldn’t want this experience!?!

The staff at WAEL also strive to instill the Colonel’s 4 “Priciples of Success” into each camper:

RESPECT

WORK ETHIC

COMMUNICATION

POSITIVE ATTITUDE

Staff Fun at McAfee’s Knob!

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

sean-at-mcafeesSpring has sprung in Southwestern VA and the WAEL staff decided to take an afternoon off a few weeks ago and enjoy a local favorite–hiking the AT from 311 to McAfee’s Knob.

McAfee’s Knob is arguably the most hiked trail in the area, a must do for anyone living locally or travelling through. This day was beautiful–70 degrees, sunny, and we were not alone in enjoying it! Pulling up to the parking lot at the top of Catawba Mountain, there were more cars than spots. Once done navigating the parking situation, we set off on our hike–7 staff members, 3 friends, and 5 dogs. Yes, 5 dogs. We love them here at WA! If you have ever been out to our facility, you may have had the chance to meet energetic Ruby, owned by Eric, or Riley, owned by Renee. Then there is Jackson, an adorable English Shepard who loves his parents Julia and Patrick. Semper Fi, an inviting Black Lab is owned by the Colonel, and we also have Missy (owned by Mark), Zombie (owned by Chris), and our newest addition, Badu, a lab mix puppy owned by Sean.

The hike was challenging with the dogs, but they love to get out too! After a few hours, we reached the view we had all been waiting for–the overlook at the ‘Knob. macafees-panoramic

It is quite possibly the best view in the Roanoke area!

Some of us were glad we were sporting our new WAEL staff jackets from Eddie Bauer/First Ascent too because of the wind! Check out Renee, Chris, Dan, and Eric sporting the new looks! Check out everything Eddie Bauer is offering for those with an outdoor lifestyle at your local store or on their website!
