Our journey consists of a 14 day backpacking tour on the infamous Appalachian Trail, known by outdoor enthusiasts as ³The AT². Though we will only be focusing on the Virginian section, the AT is the longest contiguous trail in the country, spanning from Maine to Georgia for a total of 2167 miles.
At the start of the course, participants will discuss a number of topics including: proper techniques for loading backpacks and meal plans for the trail. Throughout their time on the trail, participants will take turns preparing and leading the group, learning and practicing the basics of map and compass use, and aiding in the facilitation of evening discussions around the campfire. With enthusiastic and knowledgeable leaders, participants will also be briefed on a number of environmental education topics such as Virginia's flora and fauna, stewardship, and responsible outdoor living skills.
Then our route will wind its way around the Appalachian ridgeline giving your group the chance to visit a few unique geologic formations such as Devil's Marbleyard and Dragons Tooth. Both known for their phenomenal views Devil’s Marbleyard also offers unforgettable impression of huge house size boulders tossed about the ridgeline. While hiking the Appalachian Trail there are many great moments for solitude as well as a chance to learn about others in the group. It is also possible that you may encounter a "through hiker" (someone who is hiking the AT in it's entirety) which is a great opportunity to hear about their adventures as well as the mental and physical preparation involved in such an incredible trip. As the voyage winds down you will give your feet a well-deserved rest canoeing on the James River enjoying the wildlife and wilderness as a floating adventurer.
If you are an experienced backpacker or just a beginner this is a great trip to build lasting friendships, learn a great deal about adventure traveling and leave your tracks on the Appalachian Trail.
