Classic Adventure

The Classic Adventure two week trip is the flagship of our entire summer youth program.  After running this two week backpacking based program for more than 20 years we truly have it down to a science.

Trip Description

At the beginning of each CLASSIC ADVENTURE participants are issued bac all-girls-trip kpacks, sleeping bags, tents, cook sets, food, and other supplies needed for an exciting outdoor adventure experience.  You will only be responsible for bringing your personal clothing & toiletries.  Everything else is included in the tuition price, because at Wilderness Adventure we do not think you should have to spend thousands of dollars on gear you will grow out of in a year.  Regardless of age, groups will use man powered transportation (backpack, canoe, bike, etc.) to a different campsite each day, and will spend their nights building group camaraderie around the campfire and camping beneath the stars.

No previous experience is required as far as the activities go.  We do recommend that for the Classic Adventure you have been camping with friends or family previously and that this isn’t your first overnight trip away from home.  If so we recommend the Outdoor Discovery summer camp which is more of an introduction into camping and spending time in the outdoors.

A TYPICAL DAY yeah-baths

Each day you and the 11 other participants and 2 leaders will travel to different campsites within the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest while participating in exciting adventure activities. By limiting the amount of times a group sets foot in a vehicle (on average 1 time per trip) the group is able to achieve self-sufficiency which is critical in the development of leadership, self-esteem, and effective team interaction.

After you wake up with the sun you and an assigned tent partner will break down your equipment and then prepare breakfast with a group of your fellow participants called your “cook groups”.  You will all work together to rehydrate your food, cook it in the backpacker sets provided, and then clean up according to Leave No Trace Principles.  Depending on the day you would either backpack through the Blue Ridge Mountains while learning map & compass skills, gain rock climbing experience while learning the fundamentals in technique and safety,  head to a flat-water kayak clinic where you will learn about white-water kayaks, river terminology & features, and paddle strokes, or maybe meet up with a mountain bike instructor where you will learn the rules of the trail, as well as how to attach a tow-behind trailer for all of your gear, or shred some single track trails.

After you and your group have acquired the necessary skills your true journey will begin.  Through challenging experiences you and your group mates will learn the value of Colonel’s 4 Principles of Success; respect, communication, work ethic, and a positive attitude.  You will form extremely tight bonds with your fellow participants as you overcome obstacles as a team and learn about all the joys that can be found in nature.  As your trip nears its end you will make your way back to our Base Camp where you will be rewarded with a ride down one of the world’s longest and fastest Zip Lines and a big spaghetti dinner.  The final campfire allows us to brag to other groups about the amazing things you’ve done as well as reflect on what you and your new friends have accomplished.
