A weekend yoga retreat in the Blue Ridge: what to expect
What happens at a yoga festival, whether it's for beginners, where to sleep and what to pack for Yoga Venture.
A yoga retreat doesn't have to mean a plane ticket and a week off work. Some of the best are a long weekend away, somewhere quiet enough to hear yourself think. Yoga Venture is our June weekend of yoga, sound, breath and community in the woods and by the pond at Wilderness Adventure, 40 minutes from Roanoke. Here's what a weekend yoga festival is like, and how to get the most from one.
What happens at a yoga festival?
Think of it as a retreat with a little festival spirit. At Yoga Venture, the weekend includes:
- Yoga for every body: sessions for all levels, from gentle and restorative to dynamic vinyasa.
- Sound healing and meditation: sound baths, gongs and singing bowls by the pond.
- Wellness workshops: astrology, flower essences, longevity, breathwork and more. Nothing is compulsory and nothing needs booking in advance.
- Fire ceremonies and drum circles each evening.
- Live music under the open sky.
- A vendor village of artisans, healers and makers.
I'm a beginner. Is it for me?
Yes. All levels are welcome, from first-timers to long-time practitioners. Go to the gentler classes, try a workshop that sounds intriguing, and skip anything that doesn't. There's no right way to do the weekend, and plenty of people spend an afternoon tubing the creek or walking the trails instead.
Where to sleep
- Camping: communal sites come with every weekend pass, or upgrade to a private site with a picnic table and fire ring.
- Glamping: large canvas tents with a queen air mattress and memory foam topper, linens, rugs and lanterns, all set up before you arrive.
- Lodging: rustic log lodge rooms with linens included.
Every option includes the bathhouse and common areas.
What to pack
- Your yoga mat (props like blocks, straps and a towel are optional)
- A swimsuit, water shoes and a beach towel for the creek
- Comfortable shoes for walking and hiking
- A rain jacket and layers for cool mountain evenings
- Sun protection and insect repellent
- A reusable water bottle
- An instrument, if you'd like to join the jams
Food
Meals are bought separately at the Outpost, which is open all day for food, drinks and information. Vegetarian and vegan options are always available, the menus are written for the retreat, and Saturday night brings brick-oven pizza by the stage. The weekend pass includes a Friday wine tasting with appetizers.
A day at Yoga Venture
- Friday: check-in opens at noon. Settle into your tent, glamping suite or lodge room before the first sessions at 4pm, then the Friday wine tasting with appetizers and an evening around the fire.
- Saturday: morning practice, then a choice of workshops, sound baths by the pond, or time on the trails and creek. Lunch at the Outpost, an afternoon session, brick-oven pizza by the stage and an evening concert under the open sky.
- Sunday: a final practice, lunch until 2pm, and time to say goodbye to new friends.
Choosing a pass
- Adult Weekend Pass: three days of yoga and workshops, the Friday wine tasting and communal camping.
- Saturday Pass: one full day, if you can't make the whole weekend.
- Youth Weekend Pass: for 14 to 17 year olds, who must come with an adult.
- Guest Pass: for a partner or friend who wants to come along but not do the yoga. It covers the wine tasting, the festival grounds, hiking and disc golf, but not the workshops.
Current prices are on the Yoga Venture page; early tiers sell out, so it pays to book ahead.
Beyond the mat: the healers and makers
Part of what makes Yoga Venture feel like a festival is the village of practitioners and makers who set up for the weekend. In past years that's included spiritual direction and forest bathing, Thai massage, shiatsu, bodywork, astrology readings, singing bowls and flower essences, natural skincare, micro-beadwork, homemade treats and ethically sourced clothing. Some sessions have their own small fee; browsing is free.
Bring a friend
Yoga Venture is easier to say yes to with someone else. Share a glamping tent or a lodge room, take turns choosing workshops, and compare notes over pizza. If your friend isn't into yoga, the Guest Pass means they can still come and enjoy the creek, the trails and the music.
Common questions
Are meals included?
No. Meals are bought at the Outpost, which has vegetarian and vegan options all weekend. The Friday wine tasting with appetizers is included with your pass.
Can I choose my bedroom?
Yes. Pick a camping, glamping or lodging upgrade when you buy your weekend pass, and note your bedroom preference.
Do I need to book workshops?
No. Nothing is compulsory and nothing needs booking in advance.
How to make the most of it
- Arrive early on Friday so you're settled before the first sessions.
- Put your phone away. Cell service is barely there anyway.
- Leave gaps in your day. A nap in the shade is part of the practice.
- Talk to people. The community is half the point.
Dates, passes and the latest lineup are on the Yoga Venture page.
