The practical questions, answered
Meeting spaces, food, accessibility, WiFi, pets, booking and deposits — what group organizers need to know before they commit.
What are the grounds like?
Base Camp sits in the Blue Ridge Mountains and has a relaxed, home-style feel. The property has log-cabin lodges with heated and air-conditioned rooms, two ponds, hiking trails, a climbing wall, a rappel tower and ropes courses.
What are the meeting spaces like?
The main dining room seats up to 75, with three smaller rooms for 10 to 20 people. The large open-air pavilion takes around 100, the gazebo fits 15, and large outdoor tents are available.
What is the food service like?
Groups of eight or more get freshly prepared home-style buffets. Breakfast includes protein and sides; lunch has mains, vegetarian options, salads and sides; dinner has mains, vegetarian options, two sides and dessert. Gourmet menus are available on request.
Can you accommodate allergies and dietary restrictions?
Yes, but we need to know at least two weeks before your visit. Without that notice we cannot guarantee alternative meals.
What is there to do in down-time?
Volleyball, horseshoes, disc golf, cornhole and Lumberjack Jenga, plus free pond swimming and canoeing (life jackets required for minors), fishing and hiking on the property’s trails.
Will we have a host?
Any group of eight or more is assigned a head leader or host, and at least one staff member is on duty day and night for emergencies.
How does booking work?
Call the office at 540-864-6792. A coordinator sends a pricing proposal via a pricing request form. Once you approve it we send a reservation agreement for e-signature, then an invoice with a 30% non-refundable deposit and a payment plan.
Are you open year-round?
Yes. Winter brings holiday parties and tastings, spring is school retreats, summer is Adventure Camp, and fall is college and school programs. Discounted rates apply from January to March.
What is there to do locally?
Roanoke is 40 minutes away with restaurants, museums, festivals, shopping, bowling and climbing gyms. Nearby are the Blue Ridge Parkway, Appalachian Trail hikes such as McAfee's Knob, and mountain biking at Carvin's Cove.
Is there refrigeration?
All lodging guests have access to refrigeration. Sly Lodge has a full fridge; Sneaky Cabin and the Main Lodge have mini-fridges. Camping groups do not have refrigeration.
What is the alcohol policy?
For adult groups staying overnight we can provide beer and wine for purchase during meals if requested in advance. Guests may bring alcohol at certain times, but it is not permitted during activities.
What is the pet policy?
Pets are not allowed in the indoor lodges unless they are service animals. Well-behaved pets may camp on site.
Is there laundry?
No, there are no laundry facilities for guest use.
What about WiFi, cell service and TV?
Cell reception is very limited and high-speed internet is not available. The lodges have limited WiFi, and the Main Lodge has a TV you can connect to with an HDMI cable. There is no satellite or cable TV.
What should we pack?
Your registration package includes a packing list. In short: water-resistant layers and comfortable shoes for all-day groups and adventure activities.
Are the facilities wheelchair accessible?
Sly Lodge, the bathhouse, the gazebo and the pavilion are wheelchair accessible.
Will my group be the only one there?
Groups booking exclusive use of the facility will be on their own. Otherwise other groups may be on site. Ask your coordinator.
Do we need a reservation?
Yes, always. We recommend booking at least 24 hours in advance, and the earlier you book the more likely your dates are available.
